Biography

Lewis was born in 1869. At at 1 he appears in the 1870 census^[1] with his parents and sister. Note that is mother Sarah is 48 and there is a 13 year gap from his apparent sister.

They appear together again in 1880.^[2]

Lewis married Sallie Z. Wise on 1 June 1893 in Carlisle, Cumberland, Pennsylvania, United States. Both were single. He was 24 with parents George and Sarah. She was 24 with parents Jacob and Amelia. ^[3]

Seven years later they are living with his parents in Carlisle, Cumberland, Pennsylvania. Sarah M. indicates 5 children born and 5 living, while Sarah Z. has none.^[4]

Lewis D. and Sallie had a child George D. Ensminger in South Middleton, Cumberland on 26 Feb 1908. Lewis is a circus manager and Sallie Z. Wise is the treasurer.^[5]

A 1908 death certificate for Lew Dale Ensminger shows him as married, the son of George Ensminger of York county and Sara Craver of Virginia. He was born in Cumberland county and died in Dauphin county. The informant was Lucy Ensminger. Subtracting his given age of 37 years, 10 months, 22 days from the death date of 19 Apr 1908 gives a birth date of 28 May 1870. The certificate has 27 of what looks like Juay but could be May, and no year filled in. The online index gives the month as Dec.^[6]

His headstone is share with his wife and two other Wise women, of the right age to be her sisters.^[7]

Note: I have provisionally entered a birth date of 27 May 1869, marked uncertain. This is a sort of hybrid of the 1900 census and various interpretations of his death records. Most trees at Ancestry have 27 Dec 1869.
