Herbert Ensminger was born Nov 24, 1895 on a ranch near Muddy Creek, west of Haines, Oregon, a son of Jacob Henry Ensminger and Johanna Ziegler Loennig. Herb was the youngest of 11 children, having 8 sisters and 2 brothers. Raised on a ranch, he began his education in the Muddy Creek School but moved to Haines in the 5th grade when his father sold the ranch and moved to Haines in retirement. Herb’s favorite sports were basketball and baseball, being a guard on the basketball team and a pitcher on the baseball team. He enjoyed the time he spent with his caring father on fishing and camping trips they took together. Following school, Herb worked for the Farmers Mercantile Company. He played drums in the Haines concert band which performed at the Union Stock Show and in Baker during July 4 celebrations.
Herb and 10 other Haines area young men got together in December 1917, having missed the first World War I draft, and enlisted in the army for the war's duration. They were assigned to the 16th Company, a Coast Guard Artillery Unit stationed in Puget Sound, Washington, a submarine mine company. The war ended Nov 11, 1918 and Herb and the others were discharged on Jan 10, 1919. Years later, Herb served as a 2nd Lieutenant with the Oregon State Guard during World War II.
Herb met Miss Mary Elizabeth Reusser in 1924, who came to Haines to teach school. They got acquainted, went to dances together, and were married in La Grande, Oregon on Nov 25, 1925. They had 3 children, two sons and a daughter in the middle. This writer also enjoyed the fishing trips he took with his father, Herb. Herb was an honest, kind, and considerate man who, in addition to a full time job, spent much of his time on weekends and evenings serving without any pay or benefits on the Haines City Council and several terms as mayor. He did not seek these offices but was “drafted” to serve by his friends and neighbors who knew he was an ethical man who led by example and always put the good of his community first. Herb remained active in the Haines community and in the Latter Day Saints church in Baker, both while working full time and throughout his retirement. He always had the full trust and respect of everyone that knew him, including his family, friends, neighbors, business associates, community, and fellow church members.
11 April 2021 Sharon discovered ensminger-1.pdf. This relates to Hans Meyer: Dale Ensminger, Ensminger of Alsace and Pennsylvania, 2018 edition available on Familysearch.org. Added with Dale's permission, so all the errors on the internet sites can be corrected.
Sharon's line is Peter Gerber and this line is not in Dale's book.
The Ensminger genealogy from about 1900 back to Hans Meyer was established by the book Ensminger of Alsace and Pennsylvania, 1994, by Raymond Martin Bell, with additions by Brendan R. Wehrung. Additional research by John Kurt Entsminger established Anthon Meyer as the father of Hans Meyer. Mary Elizabeth (Reusser) Ensminger researched her Reusser line and her husband's Ensminger line. The Ensminger-Reusser-Barfuss Family Tree continues to supplement the work of my mother and Dr. Bell through search of census and other records.
