The Old Place
"The Old Place" was most likely constructed after Freeman Epes reached adulthood.
"THE OLD PLACE, situated on the road from the Poor House by Frank's Shop to Nottoway Court House, was the first settlement of the Epes family in Nottoway. The original house was built about 1760. Francis Epes of Causons in Prince George County patented the land here in 1735, four hundred acres. Francis Epes of Causons lived in the parish of Martins Brandon in Prince George County. Causons was situated on the Appomattox River on the east side of Causon's Creek, near where the National Cemetery of Hopewell is now. This place should not be confused with Cawson's, the estate of Theodorick Bland an [sic] the west side of the creek. Francis Epes married Sarah Hamlin and was living at Causons as far back as 1722. This was part of the original tract of 1700 acres granted to Captain Francis Epes August 26, 1635, for bringing over himself and three sons, John, Francis, and Thomas, and thirty other persons in 1629 and earier [sic] dates"[4]
