Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Mark Essex is a part of US Black heritage.

Mark was born in 1889. [1]

Mark registered for the WWI draft on 5 June 1917 using his nickname 'Markey'. On the registration his birthdate is written as July 2 1889. His occupation is farming and he states he is married with a child.[2]

He married Ora Murry about 1917 according to the 1917 draft registration and 1930 census.

In the 1942 WWII draft registration, Mark's birthdate is noted as 2 July 1890. [3]

Mark married Agnes Small 30 September 1944 after the death of his wife Ora in 1931.[4]

Markey(Mark) applied for Social Security in January 1937[1]

He passed away in 1955 and was buried in Maplewood Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Emporia, Lyon County, Kansas.[5]

1900 Henry Essex(farmer), his wife Louisa, lived with children Mark, Heston, Joseph and Matilda.[7]Note: census was incorrectly documented concerning Mark(Martha) and other documents support the child as male, Mark.

1905 Kansas; Henry (farmer), his wife Louisa, lived with children Mark, Houston, Joseph Louisa and Corean(Corrine)[8]

1910 Valley, Morris, Kansas; The household of Henry Essex, his wife Louisa, sons Markey, Huston, Joseph, Henry and daughters Louisa and Corrine [9]

1915 Dunlap, Morris, Kansas; The household of Henry Essex, his wife Louisa, sons Markey, Huston, Joseph, Henry and daughters Louisa and Corrine and Clyde Payne, Louisa's bother.[10]

1915 Valley Township, Morris, Kansas; Mark and his brother Joe (Joseph), vocations for both were listed as laborer, moved out of their parents home.[11]

1920 Emporia, Lyon, Kansas: Markey (laborer teamster)was the head of a family which included wife Ora N, daughter Reva, son Markey Henry, widowed mother Louisa, and brothers Joseph (farm laborer), Henry (garage machinist) and sister Corrine.[12]

1930 Dunlap, Morris, Kansas; Mark(farm laborer) moved to Dunlap with his family; wife Ora, daughter Reva, and sons Junior(Mark), Paul, James and Jessie. [13]

1940 Ward 4, Kansas City, Kaw Township, Jackson, Missouri; Now widowed and a farm laborer in a private home, Mark moved his family into his brother Houston's home. His children James, Jessie, Gomer and Gladys lived with him.[14]

1950 Kansas City, Jackson, Missouri; Mark (no occupation) and his wife Agnes (maid) lived on Vine Street. [15]

Research Notes

No current documentation supports the middle names of Van Steven in FAG memorial. There are also discrepant birthdates for this person in the memorial as well as records.Adams-36348 12:49, 10 April 2023 (UTC)
