Biography

Louisa Jane Etherington was born in 1871 in Godalming (or Binscombe), Surrey, England to William Charles Etherington and Lucy (Budd) Etherington. Her birth was registered in Guildford, Surrey in the last quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Budd.^[1]

In 1881 Lousia Etherington (age 9) lived in East Meon, Hampshire with her grandmother Charlotte Merritt [formerly Etherington, nee Suter] (67) and step-grandfather George Merritt (45, Ag Lab).^[2] Her parents and siblings also lived in East Meon.

In 1891 Louisa Etherington (age 19, Cook Domestic Servant) lived in East Meon in the household of Margaretta Rix.^[3]

Louisa Etherington (age 26, daughter of William Etherington) married Frederick Punchard (age 26, son of Alfred Punchard) on 20 Apr 1896 in Rogate, Sussex.^[4] The marriage was registered in Midhurst, Sussex in the second quarter of the year.^[5]

Louisa and Frederick had at least two daughters: Louisa (Punchard) Leppard (1897-1973) and Ethel May (Punchard) Coombes (1906-). [A third daughter is associated with them, however her birth registration does not have Etherington as her mother's maiden name and she does not appear on the 1911 census, so it is unclear if she is actually related: May Alexandra Punchard (1902-).]

In 1901 Louisa Punchard (age 29) lived at New York Street in Brighton with her husband Frederick (29, Hackney Carriage Driver) and daughter Louisa (3).^[6]

In 1911 Louisa Punchard (age 40) lived in Preston, Sussex with her husband Frederick (40, Cab Driver) and two daughters: Louisa (13) and Ethel (5).^[7]

Louisa's husband Frederick Punchard passed away in 1945.

Louisa J Punchard passed away in 1947, aged 76 years. Her death was registered in Brighton in the last quarter of the year.^[8]

Research Notes

Louisa was previously connected as the daughter of Henry Etherington and Ann (Hill) Etherington. That Louisa Etherington was born in Dewsbury, Yorkshire in 1870, and married Joseph Hirst in Dewsbury in 1896.
