Sarah Elizabeth Etsweiler was born on 26 October 1914 in Millersburg, Pennsylvania, a daughter of George L. Etsweiler and Mayme A. (Eshenaur) Etsweiler of Millersburg.[1][2][3]
The 1930 U.S. Census recorded her parents George L. Etsweiler, age 49, and Mayme A. Etsweiler, 51, at 257 Union Street in Millersburg with daughters Sarah E. Etsweiler, 15, and Anna M Etsweiler, 13. All were born in Pennsylvania to parents born in that same state. George was a retail merchant in the grocery business.[4]
The 1940 U.S Census recorded her parents George L. Etsweiler, 57, and Mayme A. Etsweiler, 63, in their home at 257 Union Street with their unmarried daughters Sarah E. Etsweiler, 25, and Anna M. Etsweiler, 23. George was a merchant with his own store and had worked 75 hours in the previous week. Sarah, who had completed 4 years of college, was a teacher in a public school, and Anna, who had completed high school, was a clerk in a store.[5]
On 14 August 1942, Sarah Elizabeth Etsweiler of Millersburg married John Dickel Hebel of Liverpool, Pennsylvania, in Millersburg. According to their marriage license application, Sarah was age 27 and a teacher, born in Millersburg, the daughter of George Lever Etsweiler and Mayme (Eshenaur) Etsweiler, residents of Millersburg. Her father was a grocer, born in Millersburg, and her mother was a housewife, born in Oberlin, Pennsylvania. John, also age 27, was in the U.S. Army. He was born in Liverpool, Pennsylvania, to parents Wesley Evan Hebel and Florence (Crow) Hebel who were both also born in Liverpool. His father was a farmer. It was the first marriage for both. The marriage officiant was Chas. L. Mogel, minister.[1]
On 27 August 1946 Sarah (Etsweiler) Hebel gave birth at Harrisburg Hospital to twin girls, born premature at 29 weeks gestation. One of the twins died on the day of her birth and the other succumbed on the following day.[6]
The 1950 U.S. Census recorded John D. Hebel and Sah (sic) E. Hebel, both age 35, in Middle Paxton Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, with their daughter Anna E. Hebel, born the previous August. John Hebel was a staff engineer for the telephone company. He had completed 4 years of college and had worked 52 hours in the week before the census.[7]
Sarah E. Hebel died in November 1993. Her last place of residence in Social Security Administration records was Liverpool, Perry County, Pennsylvania.[2][3] Sarah E. Hebel is buried in Hunters Valley Cemetery in Liverpool, Pennsylvania, where her grave is marked by a stone that also marks the grave of her husband, John D. Hebel. A nearby stone memorializes the two unnamed infant daughters who were born and died in August 1946.[8]
