Biography

Raymond John Feldman was born on September 1, 1917 to Henry and Adeline (Graeve) Feldman in Portsmouth, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth. He attended a rural elementary school and St. Mary’s grade school in Portsmouth.

Raymond started his farming career helping his father with the farming on the family farm in the Portsmouth, Iowa, area and then on the farm in the Panama, Iowa, area.

On September 14, 1944, Raymond was united in marriage to Margaret Honz at St. Mary’s of the Assumption Catholic Church in Panama, Iowa. They were the parents of four children: Joan, Allan, William, and Paul.

After their marriage, they farmed in the Portsmouth, Iowa area and were members of St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church for five years. They then moved to a farm near Panama, Iowa, and were members of St. Mary’s of the Assumption Catholic Church. They continued living there until 1976 when they retired from farming and moved to Harlan, Iowa. Raymond was also a painter and continued to do interior and exterior painting.

Raymond was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His faith, family, and friends were important to him. He was privileged to celebrate sixty-six years of marriage.

He also enjoyed fishing, especially during the summer months when the grandchildren came to visit to teach them how to fish. He always enjoyed painting, reading, and playing cards.

Ray and Margaret traveled to Holland to visit their daughter Joan and family. While there, they traveled to Germany to visit Ray’s German cousins. He saw the homes where his mother and father had lived near Cologne, before coming to the United States.

Raymond died on Monday, September 27, 2010, having attained the age of ninety-three years and twenty-six days. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sons Allan in 1988 and Paul in 1959; his sisters: Marie, Helen,Leona, Elvera, and Irene; and his brothers Al, Joe, Frank, and Bernard.

He is survived by his wife Margaret Feldman of Harlan, Iowa; his children Joan and her husband Robert Gaul of Harlan, William Feldman and his wife Connie of Kansas City, Missouri; daughter-in-law Kathy Feldman (widow of Allan) of Omaha, Nebraska; six grandchildren: Steven Gaul and his wife Marie of Hilliard, Florida, Julie and her husband Dr. Kevin Allemagne of Fitchburg, Wisconsin, Mark Feldman and his wife Annie of Omaha, Jill and her husband Jason Groves of Elkhorn, Nebraska, Andy Feldman of Kansas City, MO, and Katie and her husband Brad Werth of Gladstone, Missouri; nine great-grandchildren: Aeleyni Gaul, Cecilia, Jonathan, and Madeline Allemagne, Allan and Anthony Feldman, and Nathan, Benjamin, and Nolan Groves; sisters: Rose Daley and Viola Durdon, both of Omaha; sisters-in-law: Isabel Feldman of Panama, Iowa, Sylvia Feldman, and Rose Feldman of Omaha, Sister Norma Honz, O.S.B. of Atchison, Kansas; brother-in-law: Andrew Honz and his wife Lucille of Grand Island, Nebraska; other family members and friends.

Rev. John Frost celebrated the 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, September 29, 2010 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Mark Feldman, Joe Feldman, Jr., Randy Feldman, John Feldman, Steve Gaul, and Andy Feldman. Interment was held at the Dunlap Cemetery in Dunlap, Iowa.
