Biography

Private Warner Fellows served with the British Army during the French and Indian War.
Service Started: 1758
Unit(s): 3rd Connecticut; 4th Connecticut
Service Ended: 1759

Warner Fellows was born on 15 Feb 1740/41 at Stonington, New London County, Connecticut Colony, British Colonial America.[1]

He was the 3rd of the 12 children of Nathaniel Fellows and his wife Hopestill Holdridge. His siblings were Deborah, Nathaniel, William, Hopestill, Lydia, Mercy, E;nathan, Ephraim, Priscilla, Joseph and David. [2]

The records of the First Congregational Church (“The Road Church”) in Stonington record that he was baptized on 5 Apr 1741.[3]

Marriage

Warner Fellows married Eunice Hall on 25 Nov 1762 in Stonington, New London County, Connecticut Colony.[4][5]

Warner and Eunice moved 20 miles northwest of Stonington to Norwichtown, Norwich, New London County.

Children

Warner and Eunice had the following children in Norwichtown, Norwich, New London County, Connecticut Colony:

  1. Eunice Fellows (1764–1819), married Levi Standish[6]
  2. Hopestill Fellows (1766–Deceased)[7]
  3. Warner Fellows (1768–Deceased)[8]
  4. Lovicy Warner Fellows (1769–Deceased), married Ebenezer Cooley[9]

Military

During the French and Indian War, Warner, aged 18,[10] and his brother Nathaniel, aged 19,[11] served in 1758 with the Third Connecticut Regiment, 12th Company, under Colonel Eleazar Fitch, commanding officer Capt. John Denison. The four Connecticut regiments participated in the disastrous expedition against Fort Carillon (called Ticonderoga by the British) .[12]

During the campaign season of 1759, Warner, aged 19, fought with the Fourth Connecticut Regiment, also under Colonel Eleazar Fitch, commanding officer John Stanton.[13] The troops participated in the Ticonderoga expedition in 1859.

Death

Warner probably died between 1769, when his daughter Lovicy was born, and 1775, the beginning of the U.S. Revolutionary War. If alive then, he probably would have served with his brothers Nathaniel, Joseph and David, as Warner fought in the French and Indian War with his brother Nathaniel.

Because there is no Warner Fellows household on the 1790 census in Norwich or anywhere else in Connecticut, he appears to have died before then.

Research Notes

Because records for Warner go silent after the birth of his daughter, Lovicy, in 1769, many family trees incorrectly mix him up with his brother William, who moved to Stephentown, Rensselaer County, New York.

Since the records also go silent for Warner's son Warner, born 16 May 1768, he is also confused with Warner's nephew, Warner. That nephew was the son of his brother William of Stephentown, born 14 Apr 1773 in Stonington, New London County, Connecticut, and moved to Westford, Otsego County, New York.
