Biography

Ira was born November 9, 1928. His father, Ira G. Felty died about one month before his birth. This left his mother, Gertrude Felty with three children, Elizabeth, Byron and Ira Odell. [1] [2]. Ira passed away on 10 Nov 2002 [2] [3].

Ira Odell Felty, age 74, of Crown Point, passed away at home on Sunday, November 10, 2002. He was born in Aberdeen, Kentucky on November 9, 1928 to Ira G. and Gertrude (Coots) Felty. He attended grade school at Possum Hollar and Embry School Butler County. At age 14 he went to live with his grandparents, H. C. and Mary Felty (Harrison Clay Felty's last wife) in Bremen, Kentucky. He attended Bremen High School and graduated in 1948 along with eighteen classmates. He and his classmates have kept close contact over the years. Within days of graduating Odell joined Inland Steel Company. He attended Purdue University Calumet Campus through a company sponsored program and received a Mechanical, Engineering Certificate. After over 40 years of service he retired as Supervisor of Maintenance[3].

Odell married Alice K. (Walters) Moore in 1960. They resided in Miller, Indiana, for many years. Friends and family have fond memories of visiting with them at the cottage on Blueberry Lake, Hiawathan Lodge in Couderay, Wisconsin and Bruce Lake in Indiana. While in Miller he coached little league baseball from 1964 through 1968 and helped organize the senior league baseball[3].

He retired three times. Once from Inland Steel Company. He then worked for Vale Rubber Company for a couple of years and retired. They asked him to come back for awhile, which he did, and retired the last time in 1990[3].

Odell's family and friends remember his mischevious sense of humor which in his youth included putting a neighbor's wagon on top of his barn; his willingness to join a fun trip on the spur of the moment which included roadside picnics and the search for the right fishing hole. This was balanced by his love for precision in all his projects both at work and at home. He was an avid golfer and bowler through his retirement years[3].

Odell was a member of Shaver's Chapel Methodist Church in Bremen, Kentucky and attended various churches in the Calumet Region. He was also a life member of the Banock Lodge F. &A. M., Banock, Kentucky, for over 50 years and a Mason of the 32nd Degree at the Scottish Tite of the South Bend Consistory[3].
