Biography
Arthur Edmund Bateman Fender was born in 1884 at Darlinghurst a suburb of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. He was the eldest son of William Fender and Jane Spring. [1][2]
He married Laura Morton in 1906 at Sydney. [3] They made their home nearby at Glebe and had four children:
William (1914-), served in the Second World War, returning home safely.
Arthur Fender is an Anzac who served in World War One.
On 19th August 1914 Arthur enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force for service during the First World War. [4] He was allocated to the 4th Australian Infantry Battalion. [5] He embarked with the battalion in October, on board Transport A14 Euripides, arriving at Egypt in December 1914. The battalion took part in the Gallipoli landing on 25th April 1915 as part of the second and third waves, taking part in the defence of the beachhead. In August, along with the rest of the 1st Brigade, the battalion led the charge at Lone Pine. After the withdrawal from Gallipoli in December, the battalion returned to Egypt and, in March 1916, sailed for France and the Western Front. The battalion's first major action in France was at Pozières in the Somme valley in July 1916.

Arthur was killed in action at Pozières on 16th August 1916 and is buried at Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France. Arthur Edmond Bateman Fender's name is located at panel 40 in the Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial, Canberra and at Glebe, New South Wales. [6][7]
Sadly, Arthur's young war widow died in 1931, aged just 43 years. All four children married.
