William Murray was born in 1892. He was the son of Kennedy Brown Ferguson and Emma Downes. . [1] He passed away in 1918 age 26 [2]
W M Ferguson (service number 40920) served in the Army during World War 1. He was a Private in the Otago Infantry Regiment . A Farm Hand in civilian life, he gave his next of kin as Mrs J. Haigh (sister),of Forfar Street, Mosgiel,He embarked 14 Mar 1917 from Wellington, aboard HMNZT 79 the vessel Ruapehu-arriving 21 May 1917 to Devonport, Devon He was then a Lance Corporal in the 23rd Reinforcements Otago Infantry Regiment, D Company of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force . He passed away 15 December 1918 at the height of the influenzaedidemic and is buried at the Waitati (blueskin) Cemetery, Orokonui Road, Waitati, (Block Y, Plot 2) [3]
Private Murray Ferguson died at the Hospital on Sunday morning from injuries received in France. The bursting of a German shell had completely buried him, causing severe injury to the chest. After some time in hospital in England he was sent out to New Zealand, and made a wonderful improvement on the voyage, arriving in Dunedin in March last. He was a son of the late Mr K. B. Ferguson, the well-known Ayrshire cattle breeder at Waitati, and was a man of sterling qualities. Private Ferguson's death will be deplored by the residents of Waitati and district. His youngest brother, Sergeant John Ferguson, was killed at Passchendaele Ridge on October 12, 1917. Another brother, Rifleman Brown Ferguson, left with the 42nd Reinforcements. Private Ferguson is to be accorded a military funeral at Waitati to-day. [4]
