SERGEANT JOHN FERGUSON. The news came as a shock to his many friends that yet another of our brave soldiers, Sergeant John Ferguson, had made the supreme sacrifice on October 12. Sergeant Ferguson left New Zealand as a rifleman with the second, battalion of the Rille Brigade, sailing from Wellington on October 9, 1915. After some months in Egypt the men were sent to France. Being wounded in the right hand in the Somme battle, Sergeant Ferguson was in hospital in France for some weeks. On recovering he was soon back with, his company, and quickly rose to the rank of sergeant. He was very highly spoken of by his mates in the army, and was loved by all who knew him for his bright and cheery disposition. At the time of enlisting he was employed by Mr Gilbert Stewart, of Warepa. He was the youngest son of the. late Mr and Mrs K. B. Ferguson, of Waitati, and was educated at the Waitati School, afterwards, having been employed for two years by Messrs Laidlaw and Gray, of Dunedin. Sergeant Ferguson would have attained his 24th 'birthday on the 15th of this month. Another brother left with the 23rd reinforcements, and, was wounded on July 27, being still in Walton-on-Thames Hospital. [5]
