Biography

Harry Fields is a part of US Black heritage.

Harry was born in 1896 in Yorktown, Virginia to William Fields and Priscilla (Etta) Fox. He was the youngest of their children, and he was quite a bit younger than his older siblings. In 1900 at age 3 he was living with his parents and siblings in Nelson, York County, Virginia where his father was listed as a laborer.

In the 1920 census Harry was living with his older brother William in Nelson, where William was farming. Their widowed mother and two sisters were also in the household. Harry was listed as doing "General Work". Harry married Clara Jefferson around 1920. In 1930 Harry and Clara were living in Nelson and had eight children. Harry was listed as a wage or salary worker for the U.S. Government. They added a ninth child in 1931.

According to a daughter's obituary, Clara moved to New York along with all the children around 1935. Harry remained in the Yorktown area, but they remained married. Clara was mentioned as his surviving wife in his obituary in 1971 and on his death certificate. Harry passed away at his home in 1971 in Lackey, York County, Virginia. According to his death certificate he was buried in the Masonic Burial Grounds in Yorktown.
