Biography

Captain Cotton Fisk was born on 8 August 1774 in Epping, Rockingham, New Hampshire. His parents were Ebenezer Fisk and Elizabeth Cotton.[1]

Cotton Fisk is entered in the 'List of Persons who have taken the Oath and Signed the Declaration since the 24th of January 1797 before the Commissioners at Missiskouie Bay.' His signature was taken on the 20th of October, with his religion being Protestant, and coming from Bolton.[2]

He married Sally Fifield (age 25y) on 15 February 1803 in Weare, Hillsborough, New Hampshire, United States.[3]

On 23 March 1813, Cotton Fisk sold lots 19 and 20 in the 12th range in the Township of Bolton to Elisha Godard.[4]

On 28 February 1824, Cotton Fisk, Ensign Township Militia, being entitled to 500 acres of land, he was assigned lots 12 in the 8th and 9th ranges and the north half of lot 12 in the 4th range in the Township of Milton.[5]

On 11 March 1826 before an undersigned notary and witnesses, James Moore, the Attorney of John Tuttle, donated to Captain Cotton Fisk, of Yamaska Mountain, the lot number 13 in the 6th range in the Township of Shefford, containing 200 superficial acres.[6]

He died on the 11th of April 1826, and was buried on the 16th in Abbottsford.[7]

In memory of Capt. Cotton Fisk, who departed this life April 11th 1826, Aged 52 years 7 months & 7 days.
This man was killed in the fall of a tree.
Stranger pause as on this stone.
You turn a careful eye, and read the fate of him that's gone.
Perchance that fate may be thine own.
Then oh prepare to die.

A newspaper says that he was born in England and came to America at 3 years old where he spent his childhood. He found his way to East Bolton, Quebec where he stayed about 7 years.[8]

According to his wife Sarah's petition to George Earl of Dalhousie, G.C.B. Captain General and Governor in Chief in and over the Province of Lower Canada Vice Admiral of the same, Cotton Fisk was a Lieutenant in the Township Militia. Other documents related to his wife's petition state that he was an Ensign.[5]

Cotton and Sally supposedly has another child: Isabella Fisk (29 Mar 1822). But was not baptized with the rest of the family on 7 May 1826.
