George Fergusson Fleming was born on the 25th of June, 1860, in Barnkirk, Penninghame, Newton Stewart, Wigtonshire, Scotland, United Kingdom, the 9th of 12 children of John and Letiticia (Fergusson) Fleming, [1][2]and named after his uncle George Fergusson.[3][4]
At 1, in 1861, he was living with his family at Coat House, Barnkirk, Penninghame. [3][citation needed]
At 2, on the 8th of October, 1862, his sister Mary Ann Margaret Fleming was born in Minnigaff, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland, United Kingdom.[citation needed]
At 3, on the 13th of December, 1863, his brother James Fleming was born in Penninghame Parish, Wigtownshire, Scotland, United Kingdom.[5]
At 4, on the 10th of May, 1865, his sister Susannah Fleming was born in Penninghame Parish, Wigtownshire, Scotland, United Kingdom.[6]
At 10, in 1871 he was at 35 Albert St, Newton Stewart with his parents John 45 and Letitia 45, and elder siblings Margaret 19, John 15, Joseph 14, Andrew 12, and younger siblings Mary Ann 8, James 7, and Susan 5.[7]
At 18, on the 21st if June, 1878, he emigrated with his parents and siblings on the ship Laargo Bay from Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland, arriving 3 months later in Adelaide, South Australia.[3] /[citation needed]
At 20, in August, 1880, he went with his brother Andrew to Otago, New Zealand for contract work putting a cutting through on a new section of railway line near Outram, Taieri, Otago, New Zealand;[3]
He joined the New Zealand Railways at Outram at the end of the contract and served as a porter for a year, his brother Andrew having returned to Adelaide.[3]
At 21, in August 1881, he left the New Zealand Railways.[3]
At 22, from 1882, he was Storeman for his uncle, William Snow, Merchant at Outram, Taieri, New Zealand for 7 years.[3]
At 23, on the 11th of December, 1883, he married Isabella Buchanan in West Taieri, Otago, New Zealand.[8]
At 24, on the 12th of November, 1884, his son, George Fleming was born in Outram, West Otago, New Zealand.[9]
At 26, from 1886, he was a Deacon in the West Taieri Presbyterian Church for 3 years.[3]
At 26, on the 28th of August, 1886, his son Robert Fleming, was born in Outram, West Taieri, Otago, New Zealand.[10]
At 28, on the 8th of July, 1888, his son, John Fleming was born in Outram, West Taieri, Otago, New Zealand.[11]At 29, in December, 1889, he left his job as storeman for a position of Lighthouse keeper at Dog Island, Southland, New Zealand, where he and his family lived for 2 years from January, 1890 in one of the lighthouse keepers' houses there,[3]
At 30, on the 16th of June, 1890, his daughter, Isabella Fleming was born in Invercargill, Southland, New Zealand.[12]At 32, in 1892, his wife Isabella pregnant with her next child, suffered a fall on the Dog Island Lighthouse stairs, from which she never really recovered.
In consequence, he left the Lighthouse service with good reference to be near to medical services in Invercargill for his wife, and got a job as a Yardman with the NZ Pine Company at Woodend, near Longbush, Southland, New Zealand, for 2 years from 1892.[3]
On the 1st of July, 1892, his son, William Fleming was born in Invercargill, Southland, New Zealand.[13]
Nellie Buchanan, a younger sister of Isabella, came to care for the children for a number of years.[3]
At 33, on the 24th of March, 1893, Isabella died, in Invercargill, Southland, New Zealand at 31.[3][citation needed]
At 33, on the 5th of December, 1893, a baby girl Ethel was born in Invercargill and adopted into the family by George.[3][citation needed]
At 34, in 1894, he became Manager of the timber yard at McCallum’s Siding nr Longbush and held that position for 7 years. Also ran McCallum’s Siding Store.[3]
At 38, on the 10th of August, 1898, his brother James Fleming died in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, at 34.
At 38, on Wednesday the 9th of November, 1898, his mother, Letitia Elizabeth Ferguson died in Adelaide, South Australia, Australia.[citation needed]
At 40, on Thursday the 22nd of November, 1900, he married Margaret Brownlie Gray in West Taieri, Otago, New Zealand.[3][citation needed]
At 41, on the 11th of July, 1901, he left his job as Manager, timber yard, McCallum’s Siding nr Longbush. [3]
At 42, on the 3rd of October, 1902, his son Thomas Brownlie Fleming was born in Woodlands, Southland, New Zealand.[citation needed]
At 43, on the 4th of February, 1904, his son James Fergusson (Fergus) Fleming was born in Woodlands, Southland, New Zealand.[citation needed]
At 44, Friday the 20th of May, 1904, his father, John Taylor Fleming, died in Adelaide, South Australia, Australia.[3][citation needed]At 46, in 1906, He owned a farm near Woodlands, Southland, New Zealand for several years.[3]
At 46, in 1907, his sister Mary Ann Margaret Fleming died in Australia.[citation needed]
at 51, from August, 1911, he was two or three months at Montague St, North East Valley, Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand [3] At 51, from Nov 1911, he briefly owned and operated the Glen Flour Mill, near Outram, Taieri Plain, Otago, New Zealand.[3]At 53, from January, 1913, he farmed at Dunsandel for less than a year [3]
At 52, on the 6th of November, 1912, his sister Margaret Fleming died in Adelaide, South Australia, Australia, at 59. At 53, in 1913, he moved to 1 Huxley St, Sydenham, ChCh[3]At 54, from February, 1914, he farmed through the WWII years at Waipahi, South Otago, New Zealand.[3]
He briefly farmed at Evansdale, Otago, New Zealand in 1920.[3]
At 61, on Dec 1921, he briefly farmed at Waterside, South Otago, New Zealand [3]At 63, in August, 1923, he retired to 35 Pacific Street, Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand.[3]
At 70, on the 26th of August, 1930, his brother Joseph Fergusson Fleming died in Wallsend, New South Wales, Australia, at 73.
At 74, on the 13th of September, 1934, he died at Dunedin, and was buried in the Andersons Bay Cemetery, Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand.[14][15]
