"My gg-uncle Hiram H. C. Floyd was born in Pickens County, Alabama where his father John Floyd is found on the 1840 federal census. His mother Margaret Richardson Mayo Floyd's uncle Newton Harbin had moved to Pickens County in 1816. (Newton Harbin and his wife Mary Noland Harbin were charter members of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Pickens County. In 1856 Newton moved his family to Carroll County, Mississippi where he died in 1864 and was buried in the Harbin Cemetery, McCarley.) After Hiram's birth, John and Margaret Mayo Floyd moved their family to Tishomingo County, Mississippi; the earliest deed for John Floyd found in that county is dated December 7, 1845. In 1866 Hiram Floyd married America Harris in Tishomingo Co, Mississippi. Born about 1848, America Harris was the younger sister of Susan Harris who married Richard A. Floyd, Hiram's brother in 1857. Their father was Ashley B. Harris, born 1798 North Carolina, died 1878 Jefferson County, Alabama. Their mother was America Moore born about 1822 in Alabama. The much older Ashley Harris married 17-year-old America Moore on February 28, 1839 in Jefferson County, Alabama. They were the parents of John F. 1842, Susan 1843, Sarah 1845, America 1848 and Edna 1850. Ashley, his wife and children last appear on the 1850 federal census in Truss, Jefferson County, Alabama. Ashley's wife America Moore Harris then died and her parents, John and Jane Moore, took her children with them to Tishomingo County, Mississippi. Nothing is known about their father Ashley B. Harris until his murder in Jefferson County, Alabama in November of 1878, as shown in a Birmingham, Alabama newspaper article. Further, probate records reflected that Ashley died "leaving no widow or his own heirs of any kind known to your petitioner...": February 27, 1878 Birmingham Iron Age Ashly B. Harris -"The lower portion of this county had been considerably excited for a week or two, over the disappearance of one, Ashly Harris, a citizen of this county, which excitement culminated last week in the finding of the body, on the mountain in the southeastern part of the county. He had been shot in the head. The supposed object of the murder was robbery. HIRAM IN THE CIVIL WAR: On August 19, 1861 in Iuka, Tishomingo County, Mississippi, 16-year-old Hiram H.C. Floyd enlisted with his brothers Richard A. Floyd and David Vant Floyd, their uncle William James David Mayo, and cousins Anderson Thompson Mayo and James G. Mayo and placed in Company A, 26th Miss Rgmt, Mississippi Volunteers. The story that has come down in my family is that Uncle Bob [Hiram's brother Robert Henry Floyd] was too young to join up with his brothers in the 26th Miss Inf on 19 Aug 1861 in Iuka, and that he later "took off" and joined up in Alabama -- his tombstone at Friendship Cemetery in Paden, Tishomingo County, Mississippi, is marked "Co I, Morelands Rgmt, Alabama Calvary. HIRAM'S DEATH: Hiram died at the home of his son Paul Monroe Floyd, on May 10, 1922. His death certificate states his age as 78 years, 5 month, and 28 days. He died from TB -- tuberculosis pulmonosis. Son P.M. Floyd (Paul Monroe) of Cove, Ark. was the informant. Hiram H.C. Floyd was buried the next day (May 11, 1922) at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Cove -- his grave probably dug by his family and friends, as there is no undertaker shown on his death certificate." Husband of my 2nd great-aunt, America M. Harris. Nancy Holland on 19 Feb 2022.

I am a newly discovered member of the Floyd family (my father was the son of Bishop Floyd, Hiram’s grandson, but was adopted and had his name changed as an infant). My DNA test bears this out, although my father never mentioned this while he was alive. I’ve been interested in knowing more about the Floyds. It appears that Hiram’s wife’s father, Ashley B. Harris, worked as a farm laborer or manager after the children went to live with America’s parents in Tishomingo, MS. You can find his name on the 1860 census for Jefferson County,AL, living on the B.P. Worthington plantation. He is the only laborer listed with the family (they enslaved nearly 100 people, so he may have been the farm manager). The Worthingtons sold most of their plantation to create the city of Birmingham in 1871 after the war. Ashley, a casual laborer in the area, was indeed murdered in 1878 in Jefferson County.
