George was born 5 May 1820 in Pennsylvania, United States. He married Lucinda Latton (Layton) of Greene County, Pennsylvania. George was a farmer when they resided in Richhill Township, Greene County with children John and Maria in 1850[1] and he was a shoemaker when they resided in Jackson Township, Greene County, in 1860.[2] He was a private in the Civil War (Company B 101st Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers). George died 4 September 1893 and was buried at Hutches Cemetery, Springhill Township, Greene County.[3][4],[5]
The original text for this entry listed George as a private in Company B of the 101st Regiment of the Pennsylvania Volunteers (Union) during the Civil War. The National Parks Service lists George H. Fonner as a private (discharged with the rank of sergeant) in the roster for Company C.[6]
