OBITUARY.
MRS. MARY ELIZABETH SULLIVAN
The death of Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Sullivan, in her 84th year, on Friday last, marks the passing of another very old resident of Mount Gambier. Mrs. Sullivan had been ailing for some weeks before her death. Born in County Waterford, Ireland, in the year 1841, Mrs. Sullivan, as a young woman of 20 years, sailed for Australia in 1861, arriving at Port Adelaide on Christmas Day of that year. In 1869 she came to Mount Gambier, having been married that year. Mrs. Sullivan was an ardent member of St. Paul's Church, and during the active period of her life took a keen interest in the work of the church. Her husband predeceased her by 22 years. The surviving members of the family are :— Mesdames G. Hadley (Mount Gambier), A. B. Hill (Mount Gambier), J. F. Newton (Moorak), and Messrs. T. Sullivan (Zeehan, Tasmania), W. Sullivan (Horsham), P. Sullivan (Millicent), and J. Sullivan (Mount Gambier). The funeral, which was well attended, took place on Sunday, Mr. J. T. McMahon carrying out the arrangements, and the Rev. Father T. P. Davis officiating at the graveside. [6]
Research Note
Elizabeth is her preferred name. It is the name she used when she married and the name used on her children's birth registrations. At her death, her name was given as Mary Elizabeth and that was how she was buried. However, the name carved on her headstone is Elizabeth. [7]
For this profile, Mary has been added a middle name. There is a daughter, Mary Elizabeth, and perhaps that influenced the name given on her mother's death.
