Ellen Foster was born in 1875 in St Helens. She was the eldest child of William Foster and Hannah (Garner) Foster. Her father had begun work as a collier at the age of 11, but at times worked as a paver's labourer or a glassworks labourer.
When Ellen was eleven, a younger brother William was born. How exciting it must have been!
Two years later, twin brothers were also born, but sadly they didn't live long.
By 1891, Ellen was working as a pupil teacher at the age of 15, and William (junior) was already at school at the age of 4.
Ellen married David Garnett on the 18th of December 1898, at Holy Trinity in Parr Mount. David was a postman. They had one child, John Wilfred Garnett, who was born in 1899. By 1901, Ellen was working as a teacher.
Ellen's father died in 1903, and her mother in 1907. By 1911, Ellen was no longer in paid employment.
Ellen died in 1925 at the age of 50. She was buried on November 12th 1925 with her parents in the family grave in St Helens Cemetery. David died in 1951 at the age of 76, and was buried with them also.
