Biography

Stephen was born in Coffinswell, Devon in 1749 to Samuel & Mary Fowler^[1]. When aged 4½ yrs old, he was removed with his father to Coffinswell. When aged 7 yrs, he was bound by parish indenture as apprentice to Henry Crockwell, yeoman until aged 21 yrs. He served out his master in the parish until the last month of his apprenticeship, which his master gave up in consideration of 10s in hand paid for the same. Then he lodged with his father in the parish, while working as a laborer three months. On 30th August 1779 he married Elizabeth Jolley in Brackley, Northamptonshire,^[2] Soon afterwards they moved to Combeinteignhead in South Devon. He joined the Navy when he was 23 from 14 May 1805 to 11 Sept 1815.^[3] Stephen died in 1824, and Elizabeth died in 1830 at Torquay, Devon, England
