Biography

James was born before 1807. He is the son of Joseph Francis and Grace Unknown.

James Francis, son of Joseph and Grace was baptised at Gwennap, Cornwall on 15 Feb 1807. [1]

On 16 Jan 1830, James Francis and Mary Anne Jose married at Gwennap. [2] It was a first marriage for both. They had at least two children together, one of whom (Joseph) survived at least to 1841. Mary Anne died in 1836. [3]

On 08 Oct 1837, James Francis and Joanna Richards married at Gwennap. [4] In the marriage notice, James is noted to be a widower, while Joanna was a spinster of a different parish.

In the 1841 Census, James and Joanna were listed living at Cusgarne Commons, Gwennap, Redruth, Cornwall, England James was working as a copper miner. They had four Francis children in their home, aged from 7 years to 1 month, plus 8 year old William Richard (presumably Joanna's son) and a house servant. [5]

Ten years later, still in Gwennap, they had eight children aged 16 - 0 years old. James's occupation remained miner.

The death of sixty three year old Johanna Francis was registered during the first quarter of 1871. In the Census of that same year, widowed James was listed living at Lanner Green, Gwennap. In his home were his daughter Nanny (31), and son William (20). James (66) was still working as a copper miner. [6]

A browse of the parish register on Familysearch has located at least two Gwennap 1878 burials for people named James Francis - one for a 63 year old in June and another for a 73 year old in December. [7]
