Biography
When Samuel Franklin was born on September 9, 1794, in Williamstown, Vermont, his father, Samuel, was 30 and his mother, Clara, was 29. He married Betsey Appleby in 1821 in New York. They moved to Illinois to pioneer in the area of Joliet. They had eight children in 13 years. He left for the California Gold Rush and died of fever in July 1849 in Kearny, Kansas, at the age of 54. Despite Samuel's demise on the trail to the California Gold Rush, his relatives were not deterred. His son in law, Elmira's husband Solomon Basset, left Ohio in a "Forty-Niners" group in March 1854.
