John was born in 1835. He was the son of William Franklin and Martha Hundley. He passed away in 1923.

THE HENRY BULLETIN, Tue., July 10, 1923, p. 4, col. 2 [edited]. John L. Franklin. On Sunday, the 17th of June, 1923, the spirit of the above named well-known citizen passed to its reward and the funeral was conducted from the Primitive Baptist Church on the following day. He is survived by his widow and the following children: George T. Franklin and Mrs. Jas. J. Philpott of Bassett, Mrs. Minter Dillon and D. P. Franklin of Roanoke, Walter Franklin of Winston-Salem, E. S. Franklin of Philpott and Mrs. Ed Philpott of Martinsville. Three brothers, Wm. F. Franklin of Roanoke and G. Tyler and E. P. Franklin of Bassett are left. He was in his 89th year, the oldest child of Wm. and Martha Hundley Franklin. At the outset of the civil war he joined the 10th Va. Calvary, Fitzhugh Lee Division, Captain T. J. Ross commanding. He was a brave and gallant soldier, and acquitted himself honorably. At the age of 45 his eye sight began to fail, until he became totally blind several years before his death.
