Biography

Mary Ann Freeman was born on 22 February 1845 at Madison County, Ohio. She was the daughter of Daniel Carter Freeman and Olive Maria Curtis. Mary Ann Freeman appeared on the census of 11 September 1850 at Page 5, Fairfield, Madison County, Ohio; Mary A. M. Freeman, age 5, was living with her father Daniel Freeman, age 47, farmer; her mother Olive M. Freeman, age 28; her half-brother John C. Freeman, age 14; her brother Richard, age 10; her brother Thomas, age 8; her sister Harriet J., age 7; her brother Daniel E., age 3; and her sister Dorcus A., age 1. All were born in Ohio. Mary had attended school. She appeared on the census of 15 August 1860 at Page 103 (Image 9), Fairfield, Madison County, Ohio; Mary A. Freeman, age 14, was living with her widowed father Daniel C. Freeman, age 50, farmer; her half-brother John Freeman, age 24, carpenter; her brother Richard, age 20, farmer; her brother Thomas, age 18; her sister Jane, age 17; her brother Daniel E., age 13; her sister Clarissa, age 9; her brother Ezekel, age 7; her sister Esther, age 5; and her brother Allen B., age 3. All were born in Ohio. Mary had attended school. She appeared on the census of 21 June 1870 at Page 25, Shawnee, Johnson County, Kansas; Mary "Freman", age 24, was living with her brother Thomas "Freman", age 27, farmer; his sister-in-law Charity "Freman", age 25; farm laborer John Waggard, age 24 (IL); and her brother Richard "Freman", age 30, farm laborer. All were born in Ohio. Mary was at home. She married Austin George Carpenter on 12 December 1872. Mary Ann Freeman and Austin George Carpenter appeared on the census of 2 June 1880 at Page 3, District 101, Shawnee, Johnson County, Kansas; A. G. Carpenter, age 48 (PA), had his wife Mary A. Carpenter, age 34 (OH); his daughter Maggie, age 3 (KS); and his son John C., age 13 (KS). Austin was a farmer. Mary Ann Freeman and Austin George Carpenter appeared on the census of 4 June 1900 at Sheet 3A, District 100, Olathe Ward 1, Johnson County, Kansas; Austin G. Carpenter, age 68 (Dec 1831 PA), had his wife Mary A. Carpenter, age 55 (Feb 1845 OH); and his daughter Margaret Carpenter, age 23 (July 1876 KS), living with him. Austin was a surveyor. He and Mary had been married for 27 years. Mary has had 3 children with one living. Mary Ann Freeman and Austin George Carpenter appeared on the census of 22 April 1910 at Sheet 9A, District 108, Olathe Ward 1, Johnson County, Kansas; "Oscar" G. Carpenter, age 78 (PA), had his wife Mary A. Carpenter, age 62 (OH), living with him. Austin was a retired farmer and had his own income. He and Mary had been married for 38 years. Mary has had 3 children with 1 living. Mary Ann Freeman appeared on the census of 12 January 1920 at Sheet 8A, District 111, Olathe Ward 1, Johnson County, Kansas; Mary Carpenter, age 74 (OH) and widowed, had her son-in-law Claude Cammann, age 37 (KS) lumber salesman; her daughter Margaret "Cammon", age 43 (KS); and her grandson George Cammann, age 7 (KS), living with her. No occupation was given. Mary owned her home at 115 Walnut Street. She died on 19 December 1926 at Johnson County, Kansas, at age 81.
