Matilda was born in 1830. She is the daughter of Elizabeth Fretwell.
On the 13 June 1830 Matilda was baptised at All Saints Church, Belton in Axholme, Lincolnshire. Her mum is named as Elizabeth Fretwell, a single woman, whose abode is the poor house. No father is named in the baptism records and Matilda is described as the illegitimate daughter of Elizabeth Fretwell. [1]
The 1841 Census has Matilda, aged 13, living with her mother and younger brother Samuel. They live at Carrhouse, Belton, Lincolnshire and all are Labourers. [2]
The 1851 Census has Matilda, aged 21, living her mum, step dad, and two step sisters. Matilda is recorded with her step-dads surname Stones and she is unmarried. They live at Hag Lane, Belton, Lincolnshire. Robert is described as an agricultural labourer. [3]
The 1861 Census has Matilda, aged 27, living her mum, step dad and a grandson of her mum, George Fretwell, aged 12. Matilda is unmarried and is recorded with the surname Fretwell. They live at Hag Lane, Belton, Lincolnshire and Robert is described as an agricultural labourer. [4]
