Mary Catherine (or Catherina) Freude ^[A] was born in January 1891 ^[1] in New York, New York. ^[2][3] She was the 6th child and Daughter of William Hamilton Freude ^[B] and Mary Emma (Hutchins) Freude ^[4][5].

B. Research by Stephen Cymbalsky has turned up references to the family name in official records as spelled "Frende," apparently a misinterpretation of the handwriting on their immigration papers that makes the "u" look like an "n."
