Biography

Osie Angeline Frost was born on January 19, 1890, in Carroll County, Virginia to William Frost and Sarah Elamanda (Day) Frost.^[1] She grew up in the Sulphur Springs area of Carroll County with her siblings.^[2]

On September 26, 1905, 15-year-old Osie married Carroll County advisor Harbert Sanders Robinson in Sullivan County, Tennessee.^[3] Harbert was 11 years her senior, and had a job on the Board of Supervisors in Sulphur Springs, which would be the area they remained in for the rest of their life together. They had two children: Alma (b. 1908) and Alton (b. 1911).^[4] In 1910, Osie and Harbert temporarily housed Osie's mother while her father started a dry goods store from his home.^[5] It was around this time that Osie apparently was part of a string band consisting of her, her brother Lorenzo, her sister Elva, Louie Frost, and Fred Harmon.

Osie and Harbert began housing Osie's older brother Thomas after he separated from his wife in the late 1920s.^[6] Thomas stayed with them until 1935, when he got his own house in Wytheville. The year 1936 would be a tumultuous one for Osie and Harbert. Both of their children got married- Alma to Andrew Coulson in June and Alton to Goldie Coulson in July. Alton and Goldie moved in with Osie and Harbert, while Alma and Andrew moved next door.^[7] In addition, Osie's parents died within months of each other. After her mother's death in November, Harbert and Osie took responsibility of her parents' 7-year-old adopted daughter, Edith Frost.^[7]

Harbert's health began to decline around 1942, and he died in the hospital after an onset of pneumonia on November 14, 1943. Widowed Osie likely remained in her son Alton's residence for the rest of her life. On December 26, 1977, Osie was taken to Twin County Community Hospital. She died there on January 2, 1978, at the age of 87, hours after developing aspiration pneumonia.^[8] She was buried two days later in Oak Grove Christian Church Cemetery.^[9]
