OBITUARY -26 Jun 1906 - Friday - Demcratic Watchman Newspaper

SUDDEN DEATH OF BARBARA A. RANKIN - Mrs. Barbara FUREY_RANKIN died quite suddenly, at five thirty Monday Morning, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. D. H. HASTINGS ( Jane Armstrong FUREY ), on North Allegheny Street.

The summons came so quickly that there was no time to notify and of her children living away from here or even to summon close acquaintances living in town. Mrs. RANKIN was 82 years old on Saturday and in celebration of the event, Mrs. HASTINGS gave a little party that evening and invited all of her mother's most intimate friends to be present and share the enjoyment of the occasion. At that time, Mrs. RANKIN was apparently in as good health as she had always been of late and on Sunday morning she attended church as was her custom. She retired Sunday evening without any apprehension of even an impending illness. About midnight, she awoke with a pain in her side and Mrs. HASTINGS gave her some medicine and made her as comfortable as possible so that she fell asleep again. At three o'clock, she again awoke and complaining that she was no better, a physician was sent for.

Even the Doctor thought the illness but slight and after prescribing, went home. Shortly after five o'clock, Mrs. HASTINGS was aroused by hearing her mother gasping and before help could arrive, she passed away beyond all mortal aid. Deceased was a woman in whom were combined the highest types of Christian, womanly character. A resident of Bellefonte practically all of her life, she was known and loved by everybody. In her own home, she was all that a devoted wife and loving mother could be, while as a friend and neighbor, she was kind, charitable, always solicitous and helpful for those in need with not further thought of self than the joy of knowing that she was doing right. From girlhood, she was a member of the Presbyterian Church, always a regular attendant and a devout Christian woman.

Her husband, James H. RANKIN, Esq., a member of the Centre County bar, died some fifteen or more years ago, but surviving are the following children: Mrs. Alice KINSLOE, and John H. RANKIN, of Philadelphia; Mrs. D.H (Jane Armstrong FUREY) HASTINGS, of Bellefonte, Mrs. Frank (Isabella FUREY) McFARLANE of Boalsburg and Edward B. RANKIN, of Harrisburg. The funeral was held from the house at 10:30 o'clock yesterday morning.

Internment was made beside the remains of her husband in the Union Cemetery.
