Samuel was a career Army officer, and Revolutionary War patriot.
"Samuel Futhey, 1777 was Adjutant in the Chester County Militia under Gen. John Lacey while the British occupied Philadelphia. He served through five campaigns."[1]
"In 1794 he was Adjutant of a regiment of cavalry that took part in the suppressing of the Whiskey Insurrection in western Pennsylvania. He subsequently filled the office of Brigade Inspector for seven years, with the rank of Major, by which title he was ever afterward addressed."[2]
Samuel married in 1782 to Margaret McPherson (1757-1784). [Source Needed]

Benjamin Futhey, b. 1784 Chester Pennsylvania, d. 14 October 1838 Gambier, Knox, Ohio, married in 1820 to Mary Hervey (1805-1892). [3]

DAR Lineage Book, Vol. 16, Page 348, App. No. 15909: "Samuel Futhey (1725-1790) served on the committee to purchase supplies and provide for families of Associators. He was born in Ireland and died in Chester County. His son, Samuel Futhey, served in five campaigns, and his son Robert Futhey died from exposure at "Three Rivers."

"Robert Futhey was born 21 January 1789, he served in the War of 1812, was a member of the Pennsylvania Legislature in 1841-1842, and died 29 July 1870. He married Margaret Parkinson of Carlisle, this State, and at his death left five children: J. Smith, James L, Martha, Elizabeth J, and Robert."
Robert's eldest son, Judge J. Smith Futhey was one of the two authors of the well-known History of Chester County, "Futhey & Cope," Published 1881.
