Biography

Sarah Ann's birth was registered in 1860 at Liverpool, Lancashire. She was the daughter of George Gadd and Rosannah Gadd formerly Southall. ^[1]

Sarah Ann, daughter of George and Hannah [sic] Gadd of Great Charlotte St, was baptised on 8 January 1860 at the Parochial Chapel of St. Nicholas, Liverpool. Her father was a fruiterer. Sarah's date of birth was recorded in the baptismal register as 27 December 1859. ^[2]

In the 1861 census the family was residing at 1 St. John’s Court, Great Charlotte St, Liverpool. Sarah Ann was aged 1 year. ^[3]

In the 1871 census the family was living at 3 Queen Square, Liverpool. Sarah was aged 11 years. ^[4]

Sarah's mother died in 1876 when she was aged 16 years.

In 1881 the family was still at the same address. Sarah, aged 22 [sic], and sister Jane, aged 16, were both working as assistants in the family shop. ^[5]

Sarah Ann Gadd married George Henry Paddock on 15 January 1883 at St. James' Church, West Derby, Lancashire. Their marriage certificate recorded George was a bachelor of full age and an engineer. His father was named as Thomas Paddock, deceased. Sarah was a spinster of full age. Her father was named as George Gadd, a fruit merchant. At the time of their marriage George was living in Cradley and Sarah at 19 Green Lane [West Derby], her family home. Their witnesses were Tom Paddock, George's brother, and Jane Alice Gadd, Sarah's sister. ^[6]
Of interest Sarah and George were first cousins. George was the son of Hannah Paddock nee Gadd, George Gadd's elder sister.

From The Liverpool Echo dated 20 January 1883, Pg 3 –
MARRIAGES
PADDOCK – GADD – January 15, at St. James’s, West Derby, George Henry, second son of the late Thomas Paddock, of Cradley, Worcestershire, to Sarah Ann, eldest daughter of George Gadd, fruit merchant, of this city. ^[7]

This couple had three known children named George Alfred born 1884, Ethel May born 1885 and Thomas born 1891.

George Alfred was baptised on 4 June 1884 at St. Peter's Church, Liverpool, the son of George Henry and Sarah Ann Paddock of Cradley, Worcestershire. Father George was an iron master. George's date of birth was recorded as 29 January in the baptismal register. ^[8]

Son George Alfred Paddock died in 1885 aged 1 year. ^[9]

In the 1884 Kelly’s Directory of Worcestershire George Paddock was recorded living at Colley Orchard. Under the commercial entries was Paddock Brothers, iron manufacturers, Phoenix ironworks.

From the London Gazette dated 5 November 1886, Pg 5347 -
NOTICE is hereby given, that the Partnership which has for some time been carried on by George Gadd and George Henry Paddock, under the firm of Paddock Brothers and Company, at the Church-lane Iron Works, Great Bridge [Staffordshire], in the trade or business of Iron Masters, was this day dissolved by mutual consent. All debts will be received and paid by the said George Gadd, by whom alone the business will in future be carried on under the style of George Gadd and Company. – As witness our hands this 22nd day of October, 1886.

In the 1891 census the family was living at High St, Cradley, next door to Hannah Bridgewater, George's mother. George, aged 35, was a roll turner. Sarah was aged 31. Edith was aged 5 and Thomas aged 3 months. ^[11]

In 1901 the family was living at 52 Trinity Road, West Bromwich, Staffordshire. George, aged 45, was a roll turner at the ironworks. Sarah was aged 41. Edith was aged 15 and Thomas aged 10. ^[12]

George's aunt Sarah Ann Gadd, sister of his mother Hannah Bridgewater nee Gadd,[and also the aunt of Sarah Ann Paddock] died on 11 October 1904. George Paddock was one of the executors of her will. He was then living at Coopers Lane, Smethwick, Staffordshire and was employed as a foreman roll turner.
His children Edith and Thomas both received a legacy of ten pounds from their great aunts will. ^[13]

Sarah Ann Paddock died in 1905 aged 45 years. ^[14]

In the 1911 census George was residing at 95 Coopers Lane, Smethwick. Aged 55, he was in the same employment. Daughter Edith, aged 24, was a housekeeper [at home?]. Thomas, aged 20, was a roller turner at the iron works. Also living with them was his niece Sarah Bridgewater. Aged 23, she was a domestic servant. ^[15]

George Henry Paddock died in 1930 aged 74 years. ^[16]

From the Smethwick Telephone dated 27 December 1930, Pg 3 –
DEATHS
PADDOCK. – On the 15th inst., at 95 Coopers Lane, Smethwick, George Henry Paddock, in his 75th year. ^[17]

From the 1931 Index of Wills and Administrations – PADDOCK George Henry of 95 Coopers-lane Smethwick Staffordshire died 15 December 1930 Administration Birmingham 23 March to Edith May Paddock spinster and Thomas Paddock roll turner. Effects £3912 ^[18]
