Biography

Edith May was born in 1885 at Tipton, Staffordshire, the daughter of George Henry Paddock and Sarah Ann Paddock formerly Gadd. ^[1]

In the 1891 census Edith was living with her parents and younger brother Thomas at High St, Cradley, Worcestershire. Edith was aged 5 years and brother Thomas aged 3 months. ^[2]

In 1901 the family was living at 52 Trinity Road, West Bromwich, Staffordshire. Edith was aged 15 and Thomas aged 10. ^[3]

Her mother Sarah Ann Paddock died in 1905 when Edith was aged 20.

In the 1911 census Edith was living with her father and brother at 95 Coopers Lane, Smethwick. Edith, aged 24, was a housekeeper [at home?]. Thomas, aged 20, was a roller turner at the iron works. ^[4]

Edith's father died in 1930.

The 1939 Register, taken on 29 September 1939, has been described as a snapshot of the civilian population of England and Wales just after the outbreak of the Second World War. The Register recorded each person's address, date of birth and occupation.
At that time Thomas and Edith were still living at 25 Coopers Lane. Thomas, born 19 December 1890, was aged 48. He was a roll turner at the steel rolling mill. Edith, born 2 June 1885, was aged 54. She was a housekeeper.
