Ernest John Gardner (or Gardiner) was born about 1899,[1] one of at least nine children of William Gardner[2] and Mary Ann (Rouse) Gardner (1865-1949) who were early pioneers in the Tamworth and Gravesend disctricts.[3][4]
He was probably the Ernest J Gardiner, son of William and May Ann born on 15 January 1899 whose birth was registered in Tamworth, New South Wales.[5] His name is also spelt "Gardiner" in an entry in NSW Marriage Index.[6] However, his father's name was "Gardner" and later records for Ernest also show "Gardner".[7][8]
Ernest married Hilda Sophia McLean/Maclean in 1923. Their marriage was registered in Warialda, New South Wales.[6] They had two sons - Kevin John and Ernest Searle Gardner.[4]
In 1934, Ernest and Hilda Gardner were registered to vote in Warialda. Note, their family name is spelt "Gardner" in the Electoral Roll. This Roll shows them living at Gravesend and Ernest working as a Carrier.[7] In 1937, he was working as a Labourer on the Mehi Bridge at Moree.
He died on November 14, 1937 in Moree District Hospital as a result of injuries sustained whilst working on that bridge, aged 38 years.[8] He was survived by his wife, two sons, mother and eight siblings.
