Unusual for the time, William was an only child. Family lore says that his mother, Rhuhama (Stanley) Garland, when asked why she had only one child, said that she had given her husband a son, and that was more than he deserved.
Most sources are consistent with a birthdate of 3 Mar 1864, although his tombstone says 3 Mar 1865. [1][2][3][4]
William appears in the household of his parents in Mitchell County, North Carolina in 1870 and 1880, [5][6] and with his second wife, Axie (Yelton) Garland, in the 1900 Census. [7]
In 1904, William, his parents, and his children, all moved to Graham County, North Carolina. The men and older boys herded the family livestock on foot about 150 miles. The women and children traveled by train, probably to Murphy in nearby Cherokee County.
William appears in the 1910, 1920, and 1930 Censuses for Cheoah Township, Graham County, North Carolina. Cheoah Township, Graham County, North Carolina. [8][9][10]
