Raymond T Gaull [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11] was born in 1923 in Oglesby, IL [3][4][5][6][7][8][10][11]. When he was a child he became very ill from what is believed to be Scarlet Fever or Typhoid. He lost all of his hair while he was sick and he almost died. This rendered him unable to have biological children. Raymond was not yet 18 when WWII broke out. He desperately wanted to enlist and join the war effort but his mother would not let him. They came to an agreement that she would give him the permission he needed to enlist at age 17 if he joined the Coast Guard rather than the army.
Raymond was a great softball pitcher. After joining the Coast Guard he was invited to pitch for the officer's team even though he was an enlisted man. This ended up saving his life. He had been stationed in Washington D.C. but he was given orders to ship out on a boat destined for the D-Day invasion of Normandy. However, his softball team had a game that day and so his orders were changed. That ship sank in the Atlantic and everyone on board was killed. When FDR died Raymond was playing softball under the Washington monument.
After his service was completed Raymond moved back to Illinois where he met and married Margaret Cilenti. While Raymond had been raised protestant he made a promise to Margaret's father that he would convert to Catholicism and raise his children Catholic. He kept this promise and was a devout Catholic until the day he died. Margaret and Raymond lived together in Westchester, IL with their two adopted children.
Raymond had a successful career as a salesman and would eventually become a part-owner in Berwyn Western a heating and air conditioning sales company that at the time was located in Berwyn, IL. He eventually retired as the owner however he continued to work there part-time until the day that he died. Working and being a salesman was one of his great passions in life. He was also an avid golfer.
In his later years, he survived kidney, colon, and prostate cancer. Eventually, he and Margaret moved to Darien, IL [3][8][10] where they lived until they both died. Margaret had a stroke in the 1990s and eventually developed Alzheimer's. Raymond cared for her at their home until the day that she died. He passed away in 2014 of old age at a nursing home in Naperville, IL [3][10] at the age of 91. He is buried at 1400 S Wolf Rd in Hillside, IL with his wife [3][10].
