Julia was born in 1854 in New York City, the daughter of Dr Jonathan Gibbs and Mrs. Anna (Harris) Gibbs-Perkins, who divorced when she was eight years old.
She was one of the first two black students who attended and graduated Hillhouse High School in New Haven, Connecticut. She was also one of the first two black teachers who served on the Board of Education for the city of New Haven, Connecticut. [1]
Her obituary also states, ''Her mother, Mrs. Anna Gibbs-Perkins, was a direct descendant of an African prince, Adam Campanka, and of the Shinnecock Indians of Long Island." [1]
She passed away at home on Monday, February 19, 1934. [1]
She was buried in the family plot in Evergreen Cemetery, in New Haven, Connecticut. [2]
