On Christmas day, 1871, Mary Odom and Andrew Gideons gave birth to John Edward Gideons in Florida. Interestingly enough, it was also Mary's birthday. He was the third of nine children.
In 1880, they live on a farm in Newton, County Texas. [1]
By 1883, the family has moved back to Alabama, where the remainder of his siblings are born.
Marriage and Family
On 20, December, 1894 Sallie Duncan and John Edward Gideons marry in Baldwin, Alabama. [2]
The couple continues living with his family, and extended family, and by 1900, they've had 5 children, but only one was still living. [3]
They moved around quite a bit, and I'm unable to find their 1910 census. However, they had children in Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida between 1910 and 1920.
In 1917, the family lost their son, Bury Gideons in World War I. [4]
In 1920, the family lived in Florala, Covington, Alabama. John worked in a logging camp. His son, Melvin, worked at a planer mill. [5]
In 1930, the couple lived in Mississippi City, Mississippi, along with their son, Melvin (who worked at a sawmill), their married son, Marvin (who was a Seaman), his wife, and the couple's nephew, who was a truck driver. [6]
In 1940, the couple still lived in Harrison, Mississippi, and their 42 year old son, Melvin, still lived with them. John was no longer able to work. Melvin worked as a laborer. [7]
Their marriage ended on 2 February 1942 when John passed away.
