William Gilbert was born in Culworth, Northamptonshire, on 25 Jul 1664, the son of the vicar of Culworth, also William Gilbert and his wife Katherine.[1]
Foster's "Alumni Oxonionis" records that William Gilbert, son of William, of Culworth, Northamptonshire, cleric, matriculated at Lincoln College, Oxford, on 11 Oct., 1681, aged 17; he obtained his B.A. in 1685, and his M.A. in 1688.
William Gilbert was appointed curate of Tiffield on 4 Oct 1689, while his father was rector of the same parish. [2]
He died in 1690; his death was recorded in the parish register of Tiffield as follows: "Mr. William Gilbert, curate of this parish, and son of Mr. William Gilbert, rector, died Aug 27 and was buried at Culworth the 29th day of August 1690."[3]
Foster's "Alumni Oxonionis" incorrectly states that this William Gilbert was also vicar of Marston St. Lawrence 1695-1706, rector of Tiffield 1686, vicar of Newbottle 1699, rector of Gretworth (all in Northants) 1705, until his death 16 June, 1731; and father of Richard 1714. He was mixed up partly with his father, who was the rector of Tiffield, and partly with at least one other cleric by the name of William Gilbert.
