William F. Gilbert was born about 1842 the eldest child of Daniel Gilbert (Gilbert-417) and his first wife Frances "Fannie" Scott (Scott-9403). William is shown in their 1850 Cherokee County Alabama household as age 8 and in their 1860 Dekalb County Alabama household as age18. William's father, Daniel, died in William's house and William later gave testimony for his stepmother, who was seeking a widow's pension based on Daniel Gilbert's 1838 War service in the Cherokee County, Alabama militia.
