Biography
Rie Gilhuys, born Maria Gilhuijs on 22 May 1905 in Amsterdam, was a Dutch stage actress. She grew up in a theatrical family, as both her parents were actors, which introduced her to the stage at an early age.
She made her debut in 1923, stepping in for an ill actress in a production by Eduard Verkade. Despite having no formal training, she quickly established herself and went on to perform with major Dutch theatre companies, including the Centraal Tooneel, where she worked alongside leading actors of her time.
Gilhuys toured internationally, performing in Suriname, the Dutch Caribbean, and the Dutch East Indies. Throughout her long career, she remained active in various theatre groups and later even co-led her own company.
She continued acting well into later life, appearing in productions such as I, Claudius. Rie Gilhuys died on 26 November 1998 in Amsterdam at the age of 93
