His first wife Sarah Louisa (Swearingen) Gilmore died on 8 January 1821 shortly after the birth of their son Virgil on 20 December 1820. [6]

He was a 37-year-old, married (Sarah Louisa), farmer, living near Gibson City, Ford County, Illinois, was of medium height and build, with light blue eyes and dark brown hair. [4]
