Biography

Noel Givings is a part of US Black heritage.

Noel was one of seven children born in 1888 to Robert C Givings and his wife, Louise Frances. His father was a farmer.^[1]. In late Nov of 1918, he married Ruth Burleigh in Henrico.^[2] . In 1920, he was working as a waiter in a hotel.^[3]. And in 1920, he was employed as an insurance salesman.^[4] and by 1940 he had been promoted to superintendent. ^[5].

He and his wife, Ruth, had only one child, a son, whom they named Clemenceau. Clem would go on to enroll in the Tuskegee Air Pilot program, being deployed to Italy as part of a group of escort planes for B-17 bombers. He was killed in action in March of 1944, on his second mission. His parents mourned his loss greatly, as was witnessed by the yearly memorials they posted in the local paper over the years. Noel passed away 26 September 1973 in Richmond, Virginia.^[6] He is buried at Riverview Cemetery in Richmond.^[7]

GIVINGS: Died Sept 26, 1973, Noel R Givings of 100 E Leigh St. He is survived by his devoted wife, Mrs. Ruth E. Givings; one sister, Mrs. Queen V. Holmes; four sisters-in-law, Mesdames Bessie Givings, Minnie Givings, Elizabeth Hayes and Pearl Jones; three brothers-in-law, SamuelBurleigh, Sr., Edgar Burleigh and Moses Burleigh; several nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. ^[8]
