Her mother Charlotte Isabel Gladwin was killed on the same day. There were numerous newspaper reports at the time, including in the Halifax Evening Courier dated 9 November 1940, page 4:
NORTH EAST COAST TOWNS.
Enemy planes were over north-east coast towns twice last night. They were engaged by the ground batteries and made out to sea again. No reports of any damage have been received.

There were several casualties, including three women killed. They were Mrs Munday. a warden, who was on duty at the post when it was hit. Mrs. Simmons and her mother, Mrs. Gladwin aged 90, whose house received a direct hit. Miss Penny, aged 17. a warden's messenger. was also in the post and was seriously injured.[4]
