Biography

Ireland Native
Sarah (Glasgow) Cahoon was born in Ireland.

Sarah may have been born 15 May 1882 at Killycurragh, County Tyrone. She was the daughter of David Glasgow and Margaret Bell. [1]

As of 1901 she lived with her parents at Killycurragh. [2]

In 1905 she travelled with a sister Johanna to Pennsylvania, to visit their sister Mrs. Percy. Her cousin William John Cahoon (1875-1940) was also on the same voyage. [3]

On 7 December 1905 in Pennsylvania, she married William John Cahoon. [4]

They had returned to the Cookstown area by 1911. This may have been due to her sister Rachel who was also in America becoming very ill.

Research Notes

We are confident that this is the right Sarah Jane who married W. J. Cahoon because at the obituary of her sister Rachael, W. J. Cahoon is listed as a brother-in-law.

Birth date

The birth registration said 1 July 1883 and the birth was registered on 31 July 1883. This is immediately suspicious, as there was a financial penalty for registering a child later than 30 days, so it was common for parents to lie about the birth date.

In fact the registration was cancelled, and there's a handwritten note I can't read clearly but perhaps the registrar also wisened up to the false date.

The marriage record gives 15 May as birth date, albeit the year 1882.

Sister Johanna

Also, not sure who the sister Johanna is on the passenger log -- apparently given as age 20. Maybe it is Jane with an incorrect age.

Burial

A profile Find A Grave: Memorial #170420102 has been created in her name at Cookstown Cemetery, with 1962 as death year; but she is not found using the cemetery search website. Perhaps that profile is incorrect. Her husband is buried at Clare Churchyard.

Children

Her husband's obituary lists Mrs. Allen as a daughter. No Ireland birth registrations found to this couple. Perhaps Margaret was born in America.
