Henry Kinchen Godwin was born May 26, 1820 to Barnabus Godwin and Frances Pope Godwin in Hancock County, Georgia.[1] [2] [3]
Henry Kinchen Godwin married Eliza Ann Hamilton on December 26, 1843 in Fayette County, Georgia. [1]
In October 1850, Henry and Eliza were living in Cass County, Georgia (later, in 1861, it became Bartow County). Also, listed on the census were their children: Moses (age 5), William (4) and Mary (7 months). Eliza's younger sister Minerva Hamilton (16) and William Beavers, a laborer, (19) lived with them.[4] William Beavers is Henry's step-brother, and later brother-in-law after he marries Eliza's sister Martha Hamilton.
Henry Kinchen Godwin enlisted in the Confederate Army on October 25, 1863 at Chattanooga, Tennessee, He was in the Phillips Legion Infantry - Co D - The Polk Rifles. Henry was captured at Cedar Creek on October 19, 1864, and imprisoned at Point Lookout until exchanged on January 17, 1865, No further military record. [2] His great-grandson, Placed by his great grandson, Lieutenant Colonel John McKay Godwin, United States Army to honor the service of Henry Kinchen Godwin, and his sons, Moses Andrew and William Barnabas in the Civil War. It reads: CIVIL WAR RECORD OF HENRY KINCHEN GODWIN AND HIS SONS MOSES ANDREW AND WILLIAM BARNABAS GODWIN.
THIS MEMORIAL PLACED IN TRIBUTE TO THEM AND THEIR COMRADES IN AREMS WHO GAVE FULL MEASURE OF THEMSELVES AND MANY THEIR LIVES IN LOYAL SERVICE TO A LOST CAUSE.
By 1870, Henry Kinchen had returned home to Polk County, Georgia. Henry Kinchen and Eliza Hamilton Godwin, their children: Mary, John H., Nancy M., Martha A., and Sarah F., his mother-in-law, Nancy Hamilton, and sister-in-law, Mary Hamilton, were also listed at the residence. [5]
In 1880, the Godwin family, Henry, Eliza, three daughters, "Minerva (age 22), "Mattey" (19), and Louisa (16) [Sarah Philaura]" are joined by a cousin, Walter Godwin (20) at Cave Spring, Floyd County, Georgia. [6]
Henry Kinchen Godwin died February 10, 1893, in Cedartown, Georgia. He is buried at Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery, Polk County, Georgia, [7]
