Biography

• You may notice that sometimes my mother is called Effie and at other times Peggy. Her family in Florida always called her Effie. My father started calling her Peggy when they were dating, and she liked it. Everyone who met her after 1942 knew her as Peggy. Her sisters tried to switch and it usually came out as "Effie . . . I mean Peggy." My sister generally refers to her as Effie-Peggy for this reason. When the paper in Jacksonville (NC) published her obituary, they insisted on running it under the name "Effie Shipley." She'd been a businesswoman in Jacksonville for fifty years, but she'd been absent, in assisted living in Georgia, for six. Her business associates had known her as Peggy Shaw, her neighbors as Peggy Shipley. (She'd been divorced from her second husband, Chuck, for almost two decades, a decade longer than she'd been married to him.) As a result, no one recognized her name in the paper.
