Bento Gonçalves was the second General Secretary of the Portuguese Communist Party.
Bento António Gonçalves was born on March 02, 1902 in Fiães do Rio, Montalegre, Vila Real, Portugal.[1] His parents were Francisco Gonçalves and Germana Alves.[1]
He was a mechanical tuner, pilot, union activist.
In 1927 traveled to Moscow in a Portuguese delegation to participate in the I Congress of the friends of the USSR, in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution.
He joined the Portuguese Comunist Party in 1928, and in 1929 became the second Secretary General.
In 1930 was arrested for the first time by the political police (PVDE-Polícia de Vigilância e Defesa do Estado). E was exiled first to Azores and between February 1931 and February 1933 to Cabo Verde.
In Cabo Verde had a natural child with Justina "Djuta" Ramos Benholiel:
In 1935 headed the Portuguese delegation to the Comunist International VII Congress in Moscow. Little after his return to Lisbon was arrested.
He died on September 11, 1942 in the concentration camp of Tarrafal, Cape Verde.
On June 30, 1980 was was postumaly awarded the Order of Freedom (GOL - Grande Oficial da Ordem da Liberdade) by the Portuguese State.[2]
