Biography

Francis was born 16 Jan 1854 in Madison, Indiana, son of Nelson Gooding and Louisa Howard.[1][2].

He was married first to his step-sister Mary Ann King[3][4], then in 1884 briefly to Mary A. Wilson[5], and finally in 1886 to Alice Mary Canfield [6].

He lived in Frankton his entire life and was co-founder of the Frankton Christian Church. He passed away in 1950 and was buried in the Frankton IOOF Knights of Pythias Cemetery. [7]

Frankton, May 6. - Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Gooding, residing near Frankton, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Sunday at their home. A large number of relatives and friends visited the couple during the day.

Mr. and Mrs. Gooding were married May 6, 1886, at a parsonage near Alexandria, going at once to their home, where they now live. Mr. Gooding was born in 1854 about two miles east of Frankton. His mother was of Scotch-Irish descent, coming from North Carolina, while his father was from Kentucky, born of Hollandese Dutch. Mr. Gooding has lived within a radius of four miles of Frankton all his life. - Mrs. Gooding was born in 1858 at Cambridge City, Ind. Her parents were from New. York state, her mother being of English and Irish descent, and her father English. They were pioneers and came to Indiana and settled at Alexandria when Mrs. Gooding was thirteen years of age. Mrs. Gooding, formerly Miss Alice M. Canfield, was school teacher in Alexandria and Monroe township for eleven years. There are four children from this marriage, Harry G. Gooding, south of Frankton; Mrs. J.S. Thornburg, Las. Vegas, N.M.; Miles Gooding, of Frankton; Mrs. C.M. Smith of Ellingson, S.D. Mr. Gooding also has three sons by a previous marriage, Clarence C., Charles T., and James A., all of whom live near here.

All the children were present at the home Sunday except Mrs. Smith. Most of the grandchildren and great-grandchildren were also present. Numerous presents were received by the couple, among them a gold-trimmed mantle clock, a gift from their children. There are 29 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Ten of the grandchildren are married.
