Known professionally as Michael Goodliffe, English actor of stage, screen and television was born Lawrence Michael Andrew Goodliffe in Bebington on the Wirral, Cheshire in 1914.
He started his acting career in a Liverpool Repertory theatre and then joined the company of the Stratford Memorial Theatre in Stratford upon Avon.
Michael's professional acting career was put on hold during the Second World War when he received a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment in February 1940. He was believed killed in action at Dunkirk but had been wounded in the leg and captured. He saw out the rest of the war as a Prisoner of War and entertained his fellow prisoners acting, producing and sometimes writing sketches and plays.
After the war he resumed his professional career. He took part in over fifty films and appeared in various television series.
Lawrence, son of Reginald Goodliffe and Mabel Mary (Lowe) Goodliffe of St Andrews Lodge, Bebington, Cheshire, was baptised on 8 November 1914 in Bebington by his father who was the Assistant Curate of the Parish.[1]
His birth was registered in the Oct-Nov-Dec quarter of 1914 in the Wirral district.[2]
In the 1939 register Michael (age 24), Actor, was recorded as single and was living with his mother at 30 The Close, Dunmow, Essex, England.[3]
Following his return to England after being released from a Prisoner of War camp, Michael married Dorothy Margaret Tyndale. Their marriage was registered in the Oct-Nov-Dec quarter of 1945 in the Kensington district.[4]
Michael had a prolific career but in 1976 had a breakdown suffering with depression and was admitted to the Atkinson Morley Hospital in Wimbledon. He committed suicide a few days later on 26th March [5]by jumping from a hospital fire escape.
His death was registered in the Apr-May-Jun quarter of 1976 in the MERTON district.[6] and his estate passed probate on 9 July 1976 in London.[5]
