Biography

Jane Goodman was born about 1523 (estimated from her second son William being baptised on 15 December,1543,[1] so if she was 18 when she had her eldest son and 20 when she had William). Her father was from Chester, Cheshire, England, so Jane was probably born there.[1]

She was the daughter and heir of William Goodman of Chester,[1] and his wife, Margaret Brereton.

She was married to Ralph Aldersey, of Picton, merchant and alderman of Chester, sheriff there in 1541.[1]

Jane and Ralph were the parents of:

  1. Hugh Aldersey, heir, living in 1555, died young and childless,[1] by 19 June, 1564, when Queen Elizabeth I of England granted to Thomas Mayre the wardship and marriage of William Aldersey, his brother and heir;[2]
  2. William Aldersey, of Picton and Chester, baptised at St Oswald's, Chester, 15 December,1543, died 26 October, 1616, married 22 December, 1578, Mary, daughter of John Brereton of Eccleston and Wettenhall, Cheshire; Mary died 8 January, 1615-6;[1]
  3. Eleanor Aldersey, who was married to Ralph Jennings of Chester, draper.[1]

Jane was dead by 1555 and buried at St Oswald's Church, Chester.[1] After Jane's death, Ralph married Anne Arrowsmith of Manchester, widow of Robert Birkenhead, with whom he had no children.[1] After Ralph's death, Anne was married to William Croxton or Croster; she died 9 July, 1590.[1]
