Biography

Samuel was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire in 1820. His parents were Samuel Gookin and Mary Patterson. Samuel married Martha Ann Ball in New Hampshire in 1844. They relocated to Boston, MA and had their first child, Charles in Boston in 1847. Martha and Samuel would have four children before her birth on 21 Aug 1858. Her death probably was due to complications giving birth to their son Samuel, who died when he was 11 days old on 22 Aug 1858. Around 1860, Samuel married Frances Elizabeth Sistare. On 5 Jan 1861, they had their first child together, a daughter that they named Frances Sistare Gookin.

In 1865, Samuel applied for a passport. In his application he was described as:

• Stature - 5 feet 8 inches
• Forehead - high
• Eyes - hazel
• Nose - aquiline
• Mouth - medium
• Chin - round
• Hair - brown
• Complexion - florid
• Face - oval

Samuel died on 23 Sept 1894 in Lexington, MA. In his death record, his occupation was given as "GENTLEMAN". He is buried in Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge.
